Outback Gluten Free Menu

Outback Steakhouse has been a family favorite of mine since I was a small child. So you know I need to know all about the Outback gluten free menu!

There are a few important details you need to be aware of when making the choice to eat at Outback Steakhouse. The gluten free menu at Outback Steakhouse does exist. It is actually its own document, which can be rare, but that comes with known issues and considerations.

Let’s dive right in!

Gluten Free Menu at Outback Steakhouse

Outback Steakhouse labels their gluten free menu as “gluten free.” Up front I will say this can be deceptive, but if done correctly, you can dine at Outback with minimal concern.

Why is the Outback gluten free menu deceptive? Below is a copy of their gluten free menu and in the bottom right corner they state:

“Food is prepared in a common kitchen with the risk of gluten exposure. We cannot guarantee any menu item is completely free of gluten. When placing your order, please let your server know you are ordering a gluten-free menu item.”

Smartly, they are waiving any liability. You have this HUGE “gluten free” label in the top left corner, but then this tiny little warning in the bottom left.

I appreciate that they are not labelling it “gluten friendly” but that’s what they are basically doing. So to be honest, I’m still not sure what I would rather see in a restaurant. Oh I know… I want to see a GIG validated safe spot! Maybe one day!

What does this mean and why is it important?

This is important for the celiac community. The risk for cross contamination still exists despite seeing the words “gluten free” on the Outback Steakhouse menu.

If cross contamination is not a concern for you, then you do have a decent handful of options to include a chocolate brownie!

Outback Steakhouse Gluten Free Menu Efforts

Aside from just having a dedicated gluten free menu, Outback Steakhouse does make some claims on their website in regards to their gluten free food.

Outback has a decent gluten free FAQ page where they explain some of their responses to common questions we all have. Check out their site for the full details, but here is a brief summary and key takeaways:

  • Registered dietitians developed the the Outback gluten free menu which included training on how to prepare and serve the dishes
  • All Outback Steakhouse seasonings are gluten free
  • Kitchens are NOT gluten free but they prepare dishes to order in a separate space and try to prevent cross contamination
  • Outback provides gluten free training to their employees
  • Outback Steakhouse has consulted with Gluten Intolerance Group experts to help them with their gluten free dining experience but are not a validated safe space.

What I miss most at Outback

I used to love their hot loaf of bread. You know the one! That warm bread with giant steak knife and the warm butter. Keep it coming!

Unfortunately, that bread is not gluten free. I wish they would introduce a gluten free version of that bread.

I have been to Outback several times and no matter who I tell when we sit down, they always bring the bread. It’s painful to see it and have to turn it away!

I also miss those Bloomin’ Onions, but I’m not betting any money we will see those gluten free anytime soon.

Gluten Free Dad’s Recommendation

I’m a fan of Outback Steakhouse. Their menu is not overly expensive, so you can take the whole family. The food is a little higher in quality than typical chain restaurants in my opinion. Seems to be a win-win.

The steak at Outback seems to be better than what you would get most places. It is a steakhouse…it should be!

If you have celiac disease, be mindful. Their menu can give you a false sense of security. Only you really know what is best for you, so use all of this information to make an informed decision.
