how long does gogurt last in the freezer

Can you freeze Gogurt? Absolutely! Here are the easy steps on freezing, thawing, AND eating frozen these yogurt treats!

Yogurt is pretty much a staple in our household.

It’s an easy lunchbox snack, a good source of calcium and Vitamin D, and high in protein (The Greek yogurt variety, anyway).

It also just so happens that my daughter Allison is obsessed with Gogurt. Gogurt is the brand name that Yoplait Yogurt uses for their squeezable yogurt tubes because it’s yogurt that you can eat, well… as an on the go snack.

With its creamy texture, fun designs, and many flavors, I find myself constantly buying them, especially when they’re on sale. But when they approach their expiration date, I need to find ways to preserve their shelf life.

Can you freeze Gogurt? Absolutely, and it’s as easy as putting the tubes directly in the freezer. It helps you save money AND food waste!

Below, I have more information on defrosting and eating it frozen, too!

Are Gogurts a healthy kids snack?

I buy these for Allison ALL THE TIME. She likes yogurt, but sometimes eating it in a fun way keeps yogurt from getting boring. And it’s a great way to get some nutrients in her on those days when she lives on crackers.

One Gogurt tube has the following nutrition info:

  • 50 calories
  • 2 grams protein
  • 6 grams added sugar
  • 0 grams fat

Yogurt products can definitely be a healthy snack, for both kids and adults. Sometimes, yogurt can be high in added sugar. The recommend daily amount is around 25 grams, so the 6 grams in the Gogurt can be a little high. Gogurt also advertises that it’s made without high fructose corn syrup.

Also: Since Gogurt is really low in calories, I recommend adding more food for a snack. Maybe some cheese cubes for extra protein, or fruit to get in some fiber.

How to freeze Gogurt

Freezing Gogurt is seriously simple as sticking a tube in the freezer. You can freeze an entire unopened box, or individual tubes.

I’ve done both before. Freezing the whole box won’t make the tubes stick together, so that’s definitely a safe option. And that seems to be the best way for me, so I can keep all the Gogurts in one location.

How to thaw

There are two different ways you can thaw a Gogurt.

The first way is to put the frozen Gogurt in the fridge overnight. It’ll be completely thawed by morning.

The second way is to place it directly in your child’s lunch box! The Gogurt box even says that you can use the Gogurt like an ice pack to keep the rest of lunch cold. Place it in your lunch box frozen, and it’ll be thawed by lunch time!

I wouldn’t recommend letting sit on the counter, at room temperature. It’s one thing to let it thaw in your child’s lunchbox, where it’s insulated. But it’s a dairy product, and most dairy products need to stay at a certain cool temperature.

How long will it keep in the freezer?

Most items will stay fresh in the freezer up to 3 months. You can still eat it after that, but food will start to get freezer burn after about 3 months.

Can you eat Gogurt frozen?

Yes! In fact, some of the Gogurt boxes encourage you to eat them frozen.

Obviously, it’ll be very firm and may be hard to bite into at first. Once it softens slightly, maybe 2-3 minutes, you can easily eat it like it was a frozen yogurt.

A word of caution: The frozen bites may be a choking hazard for young children. So always use supervision when your little ones are eating a frozen Gogurt.

Next time you’re at the grocery store, don’t be afraid to pick up a couple of packs of Gogurt! Now that you know you can freeze them, you can take advantage of sales and keep some healthy kids yogurt in the freezer for emergency snacks!
