5 Tips for Soothing a Congested Baby

You’ve made it through your first couple of months of sleep-deprived nights with your new little one and you are beginning to come out of the newborn fog. Your baby is starting to smile more and you are patting yourself on the back for making it this far! But wait… is that a sniffle or a snort you hear from your beautiful cherub’s nose? Oh no, is your baby congested? Is it just from the dry winter air? Do you need to call the doctor?*

Unfortunately, sometimes little babies can catch a cold especially if they have toddler siblings who love to give them loads of kisses. If your little one is only congested at night it may just be from dry air in the room and due to increased use of heaters in the winter months.

Here are 5 Tips for Soothing Your Congested Baby:

1. Put a cool-mist humidifier in your baby’s room

Moist air can ease cold symptoms and soothe dry noses. We recommend a cool-mist humidifier such as this one: Frida Baby 3 in 1 Humidifier

Warm mist works well but for young children, cool mist is the safest option.

The Mayo Clinic has a great article about humidifiers: Warm-mist versus cool-mist humidifier: Which is better for a cold?

2. Use Saline drops

Saline drops can clear away mucous and allow your baby to breathe easier. Only 1-2 drops per nostril is necessary!

3. Use a nasal aspirator

There are so many different types of nasal aspirators for babies. Suctioning out their nasal passages can really help your baby sleep better at night. The most common type is the good ol’ fashioned bulb aspirator. However, new and popular ones like the FridaBaby Nose Frida works well!

4. Sit with your baby in a steamy bathroom

Run your shower on hot and sit with your baby for up to 5 minutes. The steam can help clear your baby in no time!

5. Use an organic chest rub

There are several essential oils that can help with congestion. (Always consult with your healthcare provider and only use kid-safe oils.)

Here is a recipe that we like courtesy of Mrs. Happy Homemaker:

Organic Chest Rub Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil

  • 2 teaspoons of beeswax

  • 25-30 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

  • 20-25 drops of rosemary essential oil

  • 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Melt the olive oil & beeswax in a small saucepan on low heat until melted, stirring with a wooden spoon.

  2. Turn off the heat & stir in the essential oils – drop by drop (keep stirring until all have been added).

  3. Pour into a small glass or metal container.

  4. Store in a cool, dry place for up to a year.

We love to hear from you!

*Remember, as always to consult your pediatrician with any questions/concerns about sickness.
