On the second Sunday in June, Freehold native Jill Tirrell would hop on a bus and go to the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade on Fifth Avenue in New York City when she was growing up.
“There’s no parade like it,” Tirrell said. “The Macy’s Thanksgiving parade was always so cold. There’s a spirit – the people wear flags and they put the flags on their cars. There’s an energy and a spirit, I love that so much.”

Now, Tirrell is set to perform in this year’s parade, which begins 11 a.m. Sunday, June 8 on 44th Street. She’s a freestyle singer and her hit, “Be With You Tonight,” is all the buzz.
Freestyle is a form of dance music that’s been around since the early ’80s and is experiencing a revival these days. It’s been connected to Latin music from day one. As for Tirrell, she’s crossing over from house music, where she had released records as “Krista.”
Here in Jersey, the annual Hall Avenue Festival, which served as a complement to New York City’s Puerto Rican Day Parade, has moved from Hall Avenue a few blocks down State Street to Rudyk Park, underneath the Outerbridge Crossing, and will take place Friday, June 6, Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8.
It’s now called the Perth Amboy Puerto Rican Festival.
Merengue’s Tony Tun Tun is the headliner on Saturday and salsero Jerry Rivera is the main attraction on Sunday. Also, you get the flags and the cars with flags, too.
The Perth Amboy Puerto Rican fest also took Tirrell’s stylist.

“She has the good spray but the people of Perth Amboy are on to that already,” Tirrell said. “She’s booked.”
No matter, we have a feeling Tirrell, who now lives in Manalapan, will be looking great on her float. The New York City-area carpenters union is a co-sponsor.
“Obviously, that float is going to be the best,” Terrill said. “No breakdowns there. I love those carpenters — they’re union.”
Birds of a feather
New Brunswick has a few new feathered friends, thanks to Marissa Paternoster of the Screaming Females.
Paternoster, touted as one of rock ’n’ roll’s leading guitarists, is also a painter and she’s working on a mural at the Plum Street parking deck in the city.
So far, the image is of a group of weary but noble birds carrying forth with a garland.
“A lot of my personal work is scary and the city knew that so I dreamed up something that wouldn’t be a trigger for people,” Paternoster said. “I just kind of yanked an image out of my head and threw some birds up there.”

Actually, Paternoster’s evocative style is a cross between pop art and Hieronymus Bosch. The mural is a collaboration between the city’s coLAB Arts, Don Giovanni Records and the New Brunswick Parking Authority.
Look for more art projects in the city’s parking decks, said Dan Swern, producing director of coLAB Arts, although there are no other exterior spaces to work on.
Paternoster is hopeful the mural will be a part of an arts revival in New Brunswick, which has deep-rooted music and visual art traditions.
“New Brunswick right now is a lot of hard edges, parking decks and football,” said Paternoster, who will work one more weekend on the mural. “But I love it to death.”
